ST 638 Sacrament of Orders
Course Description: This course will examine the theology of the sacrament of Holy Orders, including the episcopacy and the diaconate, but focusing particularly upon the priesthood. Attention will be given to the historical origins of the three-fold hierarchy, to classical theologies of Holy Orders (particularly in the Thomist tradition), and to the spirituality of the priesthood. Modern magisterial teachings of the Church and contemporary questions and controversies will also be considered theologically. Pre-requisite: “Sacraments: Theology and Initiation” (ST 631).
Learning Objectives:
Identify the history, characteristics, and features of each of the three degrees of the sacrament, namely, the episcopate, the presbyterate, and the diaconate.
Articulate a Thomistic understanding of the ordained minister as an instrument of Christ.
Understand the Catholic balance that includes both the baptized laity and ordained ministers in the one Church of Christ.
Offer a response to some contemporary objections against the Roman Catholic teaching and discipline of holy orders.
Articulate the elements of a spirituality of the ordained minister for the Church.
